    MODERN GREEK LANGUAGE ON THE ISLAND OF KYTHERA

    Students must arrive on the island of Kythera by Sunday evening June 8, 2008. To ensure you are on time, check your travel itinerary. The program ends on Friday June 27 and departure from the island is on Saturday June 28.

    Port village of Diakofti on the island of Kythera.

    Program Description
    Three weeks of Intensive Modern Greek Language (MGL) instruction, from beginning through intermediate levels. Each course comprises 45 academic contact hours and is based on a comprehensive, integrated approach to learning Modern Greek. The classes emphasize spoken Greek, as well as instruction in reading, writing and grammar. The instructors are qualified language teachers, native speakers of Greek who teach Modern Greek as a foreign or second language to adults. Classes take place in the morning from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. The language of communication in class is English. In the afternoons students study for class and participate in scheduled cultural activities.

    The program takes place at Diakofti, an attractive port village on the east side of the island of Kythera (south of the Peloponnese). The program emphasizes Greek cultural immersion and includes scheduled co-curricular activities such as a cooking class based on authentic Kytheran recipes, a Greek dancing class, and a visit to a honey production farm which makes the renowned thyme flavored Kytheran honey.

    A lecture on the History of Kythera from Pre-Historic to Modern Times will be given by the archaeologist Aris Tsaravopoulos (Greek Ministry of Culture - 26th Ephorate of Antiquities) who has been carrying out excavations on the island for more than ten years. The program also includes one day trip to sites of archaeological and historical interest on Kythera taking in Paleopoli (Minoan harbor), the peak sanctuary at St. George near Diakofti, Paliochora (the Byzantine capital of the island which was destroyed in the 16th c. by Barbarossa), the Venetian Castle of Kato Hora, the Byzantine Museum and Monasteries, as well as various picturesque villages of the island.

    Levels of MGL Instruction
    Beginners 1: Basic Modern Greek for beginners. Speaking and listening skills, grammar, vocabulary, reading and writing for those with little or no knowledge of Greek.

    Beginners 2: Modern Greek for late beginners, with further vocabulary, more emphasis on speaking and listening skills, grammar development as well as improvement of reading and writing skills.

    Intermediate 1: Modern Greek for early intermediate learners. Improvement of speaking and listening skills, grammar reinforcement, development of vocabulary, communicative classroom tasks, creative production of language.

    b. Akou na Deis 2, chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

    Intermediate 2: Modern Greek for late intermediate learners. Improvement of speaking and listening skills. Emphasis on more advanced grammar structures, enrichment of vocabulary, communicative classroom tasks, more advanced production of language.

    *Fees include textbooks for each student according to the level of instruction.

    Accommodation
    Program fees include hotel accommodation with buffet breakfast. The hotel is located at Diakofti next to a sandy beach. Program fees also include the cost of all scheduled field trips and cultural activities during the program.

  • 1. Application. Following receipt of your application form (plus references/ Academic Credit request, if required – see below) HERC will notify you by email that a place has been reserved for you on the course.

    2. Deposit.To secure a place on the course a non-refundable deposit of $500 or €400 must be received by HERC within 15 WORKING DAYS from the date of the reservation e-mail (excluding Saturdays/Sundays). This guarantees the student’s place.

    Payment (deposit & balance) can be made in either U.S. Dollars or EUROS

    U.S. Dollars
    Checks in US Dollars should be made payable to Hellenic Education & Research Center (HERC) and posted to the following address

    EUROS
    Checks in EUROS should be made payable and sent to HERC as per U.S. Dollars instructions above. Alternatively, you can pay in EUROS by direct bank to bank transfer to be received as per dates above.

    3. Balance of Payment.
    Payment of the balance must be received by 30th April 2008.

    *If for any reason the program is cancelled participants will be refunded in full.

    Deadline for applications
    Places are limited so applications should be made as soon as possible. In all events, applications must be made no later than 15th March 2008. This date may be extended only if vacant places remain.

    Academic Credit
    Recommended credit: 3 Conditional upon participant's home institution. Transcript issued by HERC confirming participant's grade.
    *It is the applicant's responsibility to confirm with their home institution that credit will be earned for the work completed on the program.

    Student Conduct
    Students should conduct themselves at all times in accordance with the regulations of HERC and the laws and customs of Greece. It is expected that students will take part fully in all activities of the program and exploit the opportunity to understand Greek culture/increase their cultural awareness.

    Health & Safety
    Health and safety concerns are a constant priority at HERC. Staff consistently review plans to ensure that the highest and most vigilant standards are maintained throughout the participant’s activities.

    A doctor’s approval is not required to participate on HERC activities but we do recommend participants have a check up before travelling to Greece. It is advisable that participants obtain valid medical insurance for Greece.

    How to get to Kythera
    Participants must arrive at Kythera by Sunday June 8, 2008. Class will begin on Monday morning (June 9th).


    Assistance in arranging travel to the island of Kythera can be obtained by contacting HERC (info@.herc.org.gr). If students require such assistance they should contact HERC sufficiently in advance of travel to Greece.

    Flying cat: direct from Port of Piraeus (5hrs)

    b) from Athens to Neapoli (7hrs), and thence by boat (1hr)
